Truth! My name is not actually Karen...
This really started as a joke. My long-time brother in law teases me about my passion for everything Human Resources and the name just stuck.
I was in my early thirties before I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. The opportunity to work in HR presented itself and not knowing this would eventually be my passion, I took it. Immediately within a few months I knew this was what I wanted to do. And the rest is history.
Since then, I have learned a lot and continue to expose myself to new challenges. HR is constantly evolving and changes with each new administration, each new societal pivot, each new generation that enters the workforce. I enjoy the changes, the challenges, and the in-depth legal perspective of HR issues. I have a passion for writing about HR and enjoy helping others, both employees and employers, navigate through complex HR situations to find effective solutions.

Why consulting?
In 2021, I started taking steps towards consulting to supplement my regular, full-time position. My pivotal moment came mid-2023. Part of my responsibility is to coordinate wellness initiatives for employees of the company where I am employed. I scheduled for a mobile mammography bus to provide on-site mammograms to employees, and even signed up myself to encourage other employees to put their health first.
Two weeks later I was contacted about my own scans. An ultrasound and three biopsies later and it was confirmed that I had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, a.k.a. Breast Cancer. The next several weeks that turned into months were completely filled with doctors appointments, scans, more biopsies, surgery and radiation. Throughout this whole experience, my employer completely respected my wishes of privacy but still found enormous ways to support me in my journey.
In joining a few support groups on social media, I quickly found that my employer was the exception. Sadly, there are so many employers that simply 'don't care' that their employee is going through such a life-changing experience. Or on the other hand, there are employers who have no idea what is acceptable and unacceptable when managing employees in those situations. It made it ever so obvious to me that workplaces still had a ways to go in providing employees with the best experience possible, while also meeting and exceeding business needs. There is a balance, and sometimes it takes consultants to provide solutions.
For this reason, I am committed to improving the workplace one solution at a time. In addition, I have the strong desire to provide guidance and support, free of charge, to those in the workplace who are fighting breast cancer or have a spouse fighting breast cancer. If you are one of those incredibly strong individuals, please contact me.
